Suspected drug trader killed in Shariatpur ‘gunfight’

Three policemen were also injured

An alleged drug trader has been killed in a so-called gunfight with detectives in Shariatpur.

The incident took place in Chhoygaon village in Sadar upazila in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased, Md Sumon Pahar, was charged in 11 cases including ones relating to drugs and extortion.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shariatpur Detective Branch Md Azhar Ali said to  UNB that a team of law enforcers, led by him, conducted a raid around 2:30am.

He said the gang threw crude bombs and shot at them, forcing the police team to strike back, which sparked the shootout.

Police rescued the injured Sumon after the gunfight and took him to Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

He said they have recovered: 51 yaba pills, 1kg of hemp, 6 crude bombs, and a motorcycle from the spot.

"Three policemen were also injured," said the OC.
