A mass rally demanding safe roads has been held in Natore, after a road accident in Lalpur upazila left 15 people dead on Saturday. The gathering was organized at the Banpara Municipality Market premises on Sunday.

Government officials present at the rally announced that a drive to demolish illegal structures on highway roadsides would be launched, simultaneously, in Boraigram.

Authorities have also begun checking for unfit vehicles and invalid driver’s licenses at different spots in the district.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Anwar Parvez presided over the rally, which was jointly organized by the Boraigram Police Station and Banpara Municipality. Local lawmaker Abdul Kuddus also attended the rally as the guest of honour.

Addressing the event, MP Kuddus said: “The government is formulating laws to help curb road accidents, but these incidents keep occurring due to a lack of awareness among the people. Laws alone are not enough to stop accidents.”

He then urged people from all corners of society to be respectful of traffic laws, and follow measures implemented by the administration to help prevent road crashes.

Deputy Commissioner Shaheena Khatun said: “The administration will take the necessary steps to demolish illegal structures built on highway roadsides in the region. I urge the UNOs to be sincere in discharging their duties.

She also sought the attention of the administration to continue checking for unfit vehicles and invalid driver’s licenses; she announced that such checks are already taking place at different parts of the district.

Boraigram Upazila UNO Anwar Parvez announced that a drive to demolish illegal structures will begin in the area from Sunday afternoon. He added that those violating the law will face strict legal action.

Superintendent of Police Biplob Bijoy Talukder, Bogra Highway Superintendent of Police Mostafizur Rahman, and many others, attended the event.
