1 killed, 15 injured as villagers clash in Narsingdi

Locals and police say the deadly fight was the outcome of a longstanding turf war

Update : 21 Aug 2018, 02:27 PM

One man has been killed, and at least 15 others injured, during a clash between two villager groups in Narsingdi’s Sadar upazila.

The incident, which resulted from a longstanding turf war, took place at Anantarampur village — under the upazila’s Char Dighaldi union, on Tuesday morning, said locals and police.

The deceased was identified as Mahmud Ali, 28, son of Moslem Uddin of Anantarampur.

The district’s Additional Superintendent of Police Shahriar Alam confirmed the matter, and added that the injured were admitted to different hospitals in Narsingdi and Dhaka.

Quoting the locals, he said two groups, led by the village’s ruling party supporters, Mia Chan and Alamgir, have been at loggerheads for a long time —attempting to establish their dominance over the area.

Both groups have clashed several times and previously opened cases against each other. To settle their dispute, a meeting was supposed to be held on Tuesday, but they failed to come to a compromise.

As the situation escalated, followers of Mia Chan and Alamgir fought, using local and sharp weapons—including spears.

Mahmud was killed on the spot, police official Shahriar said.

Seven of the injured were first taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and eight others to Narsingdi District Hospital. However, seven of them with critical injuries were later sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Additional police forces were deployed in the area after the clashes — to avoid further escalation and to maintain law and order.
