Thousands of students of Rangpur Collectorate School and College have held a human chain and other demonstrations demanding death sentences for the driver and helper of a "Bhai Bon" bus that ran over Tanvir Ahmed Zion on Monday.
Zion was a student of Class X of the same school. The protesters also called for the implementation of their three-point demand, and warned of strict consequences otherwise, on Monday.
Their demands are- capital punishment for the driver and helper, the provision of a school bus, and the construction of speed breakers in front of the campus.
Earlier in the morning, the students led a procession inside the premises of Collectorate School and College. However, police stopped them from exiting the campus, and they held the human chain inside campus premises under a heavy police presence.
Authorities closed the college due to security concerns.
Saifur Rahman, additional superintendent of Rangpur police, said police had cooperated with the protesters by taking the sentiments of the students to heart.
The driver, Ensan alias Sanu, 35, and helper Badshah, 30 have been arrested—and they will be produced before a court for remand, said Saifur.
Zion was cycling back to Meghla student hostel, in the Gaghotpara area of Modern intersection in Rangpur, when a bus, from Gaibandha, ran over him on Sunday.
Outraged students and locals blocked the Dhaka-Rangpur highway in protest, and later clashed with the police. At least 20 were injured in the clash.
