Students of Rajshahi University (RU) have announced a six-point demand to eliminate unruly driving and ensure road safety.

The students stated their demands at a press conference titled “Students against Repression” in the Amtola area near the university.

The six demands are: implementation of the original nine-point demand of students in Dhaka—including the sacking of Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan; punishment of those responsible for the attacks on the students; cancellation of remand and unconditional release of photographer Dr Shahidul Alam; withdrawal of false cases; provision of training and employment identity cards for drivers and other transport workers, and the establishment of a structure for wages and work hours; and the government’s acceptance of its accountability for fatal road accidents.

The students ordered that their demands be met swiftly, and stated that their protests would be held off for the time being.

A number of student body leaders, including general secretary of the Rajshahi University unit of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Al Amin Prodhan Tareque, were present at the press conference.
