Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader has urged deputy commissioners never to do anything that could embarrass the government.
He also suggested that the DCs accelerate development work, and spend less time giving protocol to lawmakers and ministers.
Obaidul, general secretary of the ruling Awami League, spoke at the deputy commissioners’ conference at the Bangladesh Secretariat yesterday.
After the meeting Obaidul Quader told reporters that he and the railways minister who also attended the meeting had said they did not need protocol from the DCs.
“It they are always busy giving protocol to VIPs, when they will have time for development work?” he said.
“The Election Commission will declare the schedule for the next election within three months. The DCs do not have time for protocol now,” he added.
“We want to ensure significant progress with the Padma Bridge, Metro Rail, and Karnaphuli tunnel projects. We also want to see the national highways and other road networks in good condition,” he further said.
“The DCs performed well when the holidaymakers went home during Eid-ul-Fitr. Now I would request the DCs to take early steps to ensure smooth travel before Eid-ul-Azha,” he said.
