The International Crimes Tribunal is set to deliver its verdict on Tuesday against seven accused, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, and five others in a case involving alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising in 2024.
A three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, fixed the date on Monday.
The other members of the bench are Judge Md Manzurul Bashid and Judge Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
Prosecutors Gazi MH Tamim, Faruk Ahmed and other members of the prosecution team were present at the tribunal.
The tribunal had earlier kept the case reserved for judgment after hearing closing arguments from both the prosecution and defence. Tribunal-2 passed the order on August 17.
State-appointed lawyers M Hasan Imam and Ishrat Jahan represented the accused, while prosecutors Mizanul Islam and Gazi MH Tamim represented the prosecution.
Besides Obaidul Quader and Mohammad Ali Arafat, the other accused are Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, and General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Wali Asif Enan.
All seven accused are absconding.
On January 22, Tribunal-2 ordered the trial to begin after framing charges against the seven accused. The tribunal took cognisance of the formal charges the prosecution submitted on December 18, 2025.
The prosecution began presenting its closing arguments on August 4.
According to the prosecution, the accused jointly issued directives and made provocative and inciting statements to suppress the July-August movement.
They allegedly held several meetings to plan violence and called on party activists to take to the streets and put up resistance.
The prosecution further alleged that the accused were involved in armed attacks, harsh repression and efforts to control the media in some areas.
It said their actions resulted in killings, attempted killings and widespread violence across the country, which constitute crimes against humanity.
