Two suspected drug peddlers have been killed in what RAB describes as a gunfight in Cox’s Bazar’s Himchhari.
The alleged gunfight took place around 3:45am on Thursday—on Marine Drive road.
Police identified one of the deceased as Enamul Haque, 33, hailing from Chandpur. The identity of the other person could not be determined yet.
RAB 7 Cox’s Bazar company commander Major Mehedi Hasan said the two men were in a private car and tried to flee from a mobile checkpost.
“The Cox’s Bazar-bound vehicle did not stop when we asked it to, and it tried to force its way through the checkpost,” he said.
RAB and BGB members, there present, followed the vehicle. But the men in the private car opened fire, prompting RAB to shoot back.
“The private car fell into a roadside ditch. Police rescued two bullet-riddled persons from the vehicle, and rushed them to the hospital,” the RAB officer added.
Ramu police’s Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said the on-duty doctor pronounced the two men dead as soon as they were taken to a local hospital.
“The private car, a foreign-made pistol, a one-shooter gun and contraband yaba pills were seized,” he added.
Cox’s Bazar Additional Police Superintendent Md Afrujul Haq Tutul said they suspect both the men were drug dealers.
“Police are on the scene collecting evidence,” he added.
