One of the top drug lords of Bogra has been killed in a gunfight with the law enforcement, police say.

Putu Sarkar, the suspected drug peddler, was the brother of expelled Sramik League leader Tufan Sarkar.

Police said Putu was accused in five drug-related cases.

A Banani police outpost team went to Bhotkandi Bridge area after being tipped off about a clash between two drugs gangs in the early hours of Friday, Additional Police Superintendent Sanatan Chakrabarty said.

“The drug peddlers fired shots at police, triggering a skirmish. Putu was found on the spot with gunshot wounds after the gunfight,” Sanatan claimed.

“The duty doctor at Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital pronounced him dead when we took him there,” he added.

Two locally-made guns, eight cartridges and 500 contraband yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

Putu’s family members could not be contacted for comments despite repeated attempts.

His brother Tufan was arrested over the rape and torture of a female student. The latter is currently in the Bogra district jail.
