A suspected member of a gang of robbers has been killed in a so-called gunfight with the police in Jhenaidah. The incident occurred in Maheshpur Upazila around 3am on Thursday.
The deceased suspect, named Nuru, 45, was a resident of Jessore district, and notorious in the region as a robber, said the police.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Kotchandpur circle) Mirza Salauddin confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, saying: “A team from the Maheshpur police station was patrolling the Kaliganj-Jibonnagar Highway.
“The police received a tip-off that a gang of criminals were planning to conduct a robbery by blocking the highway with a tree stump, and decided to investigate the area.”
Salauddin continued: “As soon as the police approached, the gang of robbers started firing at them. After a few minutes of a gunfight, police found the injured Nuru, on the scene.
“He was taken to a nearby hospital where the doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.”
Police seized two bombs, one locally made gun, one bullet, a machete and other equipment from the area.
