People, including representatives of both the countries, started the programmes at noon by exchanging floral wreaths between the representatives of both countries.
Ujjiban Society of West Bengal, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Council and Amra Muktijoddhar Sontan arranged the joint event.
Suruj Das, president of Ujjiban Society represented India when Md Mostafizur Rahman, primary and mass education minister of Bangladesh, represented Bangladesh at the programme.
A large number of people came together to observe the day together though there were lots of obligations due to security reasons.
They said the day could not be observed together because of tight security at border. Though the language and culture of Bangladesh and India are same but the border has kept people of these countries divided into groups.
Minister Mostafizur said: “I never attended such event before. Bangladesh, as a nation, proved a long ago, in 1952, that we do not bow to anyone. People from all over the world recognise the Bangla language now. I feel privileged to be a part of the observation today.”
Suruj Das, the representative of India, said: “This is amazing that the people of these two countries are being able to observe the day together. We are proud and overwhelmed to be able to arrange the programme.”
A 13-member team of artists led by Nobo Kumar Das from India and a team of Bangladeshi artists recited poems and performed songs on Ekushey February at the programme.
