Fifty four aspirants, including four for mayoral post, collected nomination papers on Tuesday to contest the upcoming Barisal City Corporation polls, scheduled to be held on July 30.
Returning Officer, also the Regional Election Officer Mujibur Rahman said: “So far four nomination papers for mayoral post, 40 for Councilor posts and 10 for reserved seats for women have been collected today by the aspirants and their relatives.”
Mayoral aspirants include- BNP-backed Bilkis Akter Jahan Shirin, Jatiya Party (Ershad)-backed Iqbal Hossain Tapas, CPB-supported AK Azad and Islami Shashontantra Andolan’s Maulana Obaidur Rahman Mahbub.
Aspirants can collect and submit nomination papers till June 28. Returning Officer will scrutinize those papers from July 1 to 2 and the final date for withdrawing candidature is July 9.
The election symbols will be distributed on July 10 and the vote for the city corporation will be held on July 30.
Barisal City Corporation has 2,42,166 voters, including 1,21,436 males and 1,20,730 females, to exercise their franchise for electing one mayor, 30 ward Councilors and 10 reserved seats for women in the upcoming polls.
