Update : 05 Dec 2023, 08:51 PM

A total of 16 candidates’ nomination papers from six constituencies in Kishoreganj have been cancelled after scrutinization.

Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the matter on Sunday and Monday.

A total of 54 candidates submitted nomination papers for contesting in the 12th national parliamentary election, scheduled for January 7.

The returning officer said that the nomination of this year's independent candidate Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman Ranjan, a two-time former MP of BNP from Kishoreganj-2 (Katiadi-Pakundia) seat, had been revoked for concealing information about cases against him and bank loans.

Awami League's Nasirul Islam Khan's nomination for the Kishoreganj-3 (Karimganj-Tarail) constituency has also been cancelled due to the concealment of information related to cases filed against him.

The other candidates, whose nominations were cancelled are Syed Safayetul Islam (independent), Sharif Ahmed Sadi (independent) and Abul Kasem (Bangladesh Congress) from the Kishoreganj-1 constituency.

Ashraf Ali (Democratic Party) and Ahsan Ullah (Trinamool BNP) from Kishoreganj-2 constituency.

Nasirul Islam Khan (Awami League), Shamim Ahmed (independent), Rubel Mia (independent) and Barrister Golam Kabir Bhuna (Independent) from Kishoreganj-3.

According to the returning officer, the cancellation of nominations for other candidates was attributed to errors, particularly concerning the signatures of 1% of voters.

Among the candidates whose nominations were revoked due to the concealment of case information are Maulana Sherjahan Momen (Islami Oikya Jote) in Kishoreganj-4 (Itna, Mithamin, and Ashtagram), independent candidate Babu Subrata Pal from Kishoreganj-5 (Nikli-Bajitpur), Krishak Shreek Janata League candidate Sajjat Hossain, Bangladesh Cultural Liberation Alliance candidate Robin Mia from Kishoreganj-6 (Bhairab-Kuliachar), independent candidate Shahab Uddin from Kishoreganj-6 (Bhairab-Kuliachar), Bangladesh Cultural Liberation Alliance candidate Ayub Hossain from Kishoreganj-6 (Bhairab-Kuliachar).
