Senior journalist Moyeenul Alam dies

Moyeenul served as the Daily Ittefaq’s Chittagong bureau chief for over two decades

Veteran journalist, Moyeenul Alam, has passed away at the age of 81.

He died at 3:30am (BdST) on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Toronto, Canada, his younger brother Prof Dr Mohit Ul Alam said.

Moyeenul served as the Daily Ittefaq’s Chittagong bureau chief for over two decades.

The veteran journalist worked as a staff correspondent for the Pakistan Observer when the daily Ittefaq closed in 1969.  

Moyeenul, the son of renowned litterateur Mahbub Alam, was the only journalist from Bangladesh to have covered the summit meeting between the then US president Ronald Reagan and USSR’s Mikhail Gorbachev on December 10, 1987 at the White House.

He started his journalism career at the English daily The Eastern Examiner of Chittagong as a sub-editor in 1956 before joining The Daily Unity as a news editor four years later.

Moyeenul earned a diploma in news editing from the International Press Institute in Zurich in 1964. As a trainer, he obtained a certificate from International Institute of Journalism in Berlin, Germany.

He played a key role in founding the Chittagong Press Club and the Chittagong Union of Journalists.

The Chittagong Press Club and the CUJ expressed condolence at the demise of the veteran journalist.
