Leaders and activists of Chittagong University (CU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League blocked the Chittagong-Hathazari highway for about an hour on Sunday, demanding the immediate release of Chhatra League men who were detained by Baghaichari police in Rangamati.
Hathazari police said the Chhatra League men barricaded the Chittagong-Hathazari highway near gate-2 of the CU campus at around 1:00pm and staged a demonstration demanding the release of the detained Chhatra League leaders.
CU sources said vehicular movements on the road were stopped for about an hour because of the blockade.
Hathazari police station OC Belal Mohammed Jahangir told Dhaka Tribune: “A group of Chhatra League men barricaded the road, halting the traffic, because of the Baghaichari incident. Police were only able to remove the barricade after having a discussion with them.”
“The Chhatra League men demanded the release of their men in Baghaichari, but we (police) told them that Hathazari police has nothing to do in this regard. They later lifted their barricade,” the OC said.
Chhatra League sources said Baghaichari police had detained four of their leaders and activists, though charges against the Chhatra League men were yet to be known.
Confirming this, Rangamati Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar) told Dhaka Tribune: “Police detained some criminals in Baghaichari. Contact the Baghaichari police for further details.”
Despite several attempts, the OC of Baghaichari police station could not be reached.
