Investigators appear to have made little progress in solving the murder of publisher and leftist leader Shahzahan Bachchu, who was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Munshiganj’s Sirajdikhan Upazila on June 11.
But police insist that the pace of the investigation “is satisfactory.”
“We are going through the surveillance camera footage to identify the killers,” Senior Assistant Superintendent of police Md Asaduzzaman said on Monday.
So far, no-one has been detained for the murder.
Police have recorded witness statements and spoken to Bachchu's family members.
“We are looking into four motives — whether Bachchu had published books hurting religious sentiments, a family feud, and business related conflicts,” said Munshiganj police chief Md Jayedul Alam.
Bachchu is a former general secretary of Communist Party of Bangladesh’s Munshiganj unit and owner of Bishakha Publication.
CPB’s Munshiganj unit President SM Kamal claimed that the publisher had been on the hit list of the extremists for quite some time.
Jayedul said Bachchu’s wife had told them that her husband had received death threats in the past.
“The motive will be uncovered soon,” the police chief said.
Eid vacation has also slowed down the investigation progress, Jayedul said.
However, specialized units such as the Anti-Terrorism Unit, RAB intelligence, Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit, and others, are trying their best to gather evidence, he added.
