Helal Uddin Bhuiyan, the police sergeant who uncovered the infamous 10-truck arms haul, has been killed in a road accident.
Around 1:45pm Sunday, Helal's car veered off the Dhaka – Chittagong Highway near Nasir Memorial College in Feni, hitting two trees consecutively, Feni Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rashed Khan Chowdhury said.
Police recovered Helal and took him to Feni Sadar Hospital. Doctors there sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way, the OC said.
Helal was serving as a traffic inspector at Chittagong Port.
OC Rashed said Helal was driving his car from his hometown in Chandina, Comilla to his workplace in Chittagong.
Mahipal Highway Police Station OC Abdul Awal said the private car was being kept at the station.
Helal Uddin, then a sergeant and Sergeant Alauddin intercepted the massive shipment of illegal weapons as they were being loaded on to 10 trucks from two engine-boats at the jetty of Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) on the Karnaphuli River.
Helal and Alauddin were both implicated in the arms haul by authorities and sent to jail. Helal spent 28 months incarcerated.
Ministers of the then BNP-led government and senior officials were eventually found involved in the arms haul by a court in 2014.
Jainal Hazari, the influential Feni Awami League leader who was once accused in the 10-truck arms case, has alleged that Helal was murdered. However, police say there is no evidence pointing to foul play as of now.
