Locals say landslides occurred in Shimultali and Olipara areas of the hill town

Update : 11 Jun 2018, 11:08 AM

Ceaseless downpours have triggered landslides and wall collapse in several neighbourhoods in Rangamati.

However, no casualties were reported in these incidents.

According to locals, landslides occurred in Shimultali and Olipara areas of the hill town around 10pm on Sunday.

District administration and fire service officials had already started evacuating locals from risky areas.

There were also reports of wall collapse in some establishments due to the rain that started on Sunday morning.

Communication on the Chittagong-Rangamati road got snapped after an electric poll fell in the Shalbagan area around 10:30pm.

The rainfall caused power disruption since Sunday evening, affecting thousands across the district.

Rangamati Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Director Didarul Alam said they remained on alert for further disaster.

Nezarat Deputy Collector Tapas Shil said efforts to evacuate the locals from risky areas were underway.

The locals were also being alerted through loudspeakers, he said.
