A suspected drug peddler has been killed in an alleged gunfight with police in Bhairab of Kishoreganj.

Police claim the deceased, Selim Mia, was wanted by law enforcement in 10 different cases.

The number of suspected drug dealers killed in so-called gunfights has climbed to 139 since the government launched an aggressive anti-narcotics drive in early May, marred by allegations of human rights violations.

Bhairab police station Officer-in-Charge, Mokhlesur Rahman, said they raided the Gachtalaghat area on early Thursday to arrest a gang of drug traders.

The drug peddlers opened fire first, triggering a skirmish. Selim was found dead on the spot after the gunfight, Mokhlesur claimed.

He said they had recovered a pistol, 510 yaba pills, and 24 bottles of phensedyl from the spot.

66 detained in Khulna, Tangail

Khulna police said they arrested 22 ‘drug dealers’ in a 24-hour drive launched at 8am on Wednesday.

Police also claimed to have recovered 58 yaba pills, 144g of cannabis, and one litre of moonshine or homemade liquor.

In Tangail, police said they arrested 44 persons, including 10 ‘drug dealers’, in their ongoing anti-narcotics drive.
