The Dhaka Tribune reached out to Wadud who claimed he was not involved with the incident at all. He also claimed it was all a ploy to tarnish his reputation. The incident took place on Monday, February 13, when the truck was carrying grain to Rangpur from Pabna.
About four to five people on motorcycles halted the truck on Domdoma Bridge about 7km outside Rangpur city. Abdul Malek, the truck driver, said the bikers identified themselves as being sent by one Wadud Ali, a News24 correspondent, to halt the truck over allegedly carrying contraband goods.
The bikers demanded Tk5lakh for safe passage, and threatened to ground the truck if they were not paid up. One of the bikers, Sohel, threatened to take photos with a camera emblazoned with the News24 emblem and insignia.
When the driver refused, the bikers proceeded to beat up the driver and helper. They also robbed the truck crew of about Tk15,000 in cash.
Afterwards, they forced Malek to drive the truck back to Rangpur city. The truck was parked on a main street near KDC Road in the Alamnagar area of the city.
Locals found the parked truck to be suspicious and alerted the police. When police arrived at the scene, the bikers scrambled, but two were caught and arrested by the police.
