Two men were killed in a "gunfight" after detention by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in separate incidents in Mymensingh in the early hours of Saturday.

Police claim deceased Alamgir, 24, was accused in a murder case while Sirjaul, 23, was a mugger.

According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of DB Ashiqur Rahman, police arrested Alamgir, chief accused in the sensational murder of Abul Kashem in Sadar upazila, from Gopalganj on Friday night.

The police said that at around 3am, officers took Alamgir to identify and capture the other accused in the case in Mymensingh. When they reached the area near a local bazar beside the street leading to Poranganj, they were intercepted by another accused Siddique and several others.

When a gunfight ensued between the two parties, Alamgir took a bullet to himself. He was later declared dead after being admitted to Mymensingh Medical College (MMC).

The OC further informed the reporter that Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Atique, Rajab and Nazmul were injured in the gunfight. They were all admitted to MMC afterwards.

On the other hand, police arrested Sirjaul as a suspect in the murder of Mymensingh Zila School math teacher Mobarak Morshed Milky. On Thursday night, Milky was returning home from the launching ceremony of Bangabandhu Satellite-1 held in the Advocate Tareque Memorial auditorium when he was stabbed to death by muggers.

After Sirajul was arrested on Saturday, he accompanied the police when they went on the hunt for capturing the others involved. After reaching SA Sarker road in Shankipara, Sirajul's accomplices intercepted the police and in the ensuing gunfight, Sirajul was killed.

The bodies of both were sent to the police station.
