UN Security Council delegation members overwhelmed after visiting Rohingya camps

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) members became overwhelmed with emotion after visiting the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.The emotional situation happened when the UNSC delegation members were talking to refugees living at the Naikhongchari’s no-man’s land of the Tambru border. During that time, the Rohingya women wept while hugging some of the delegation members. The UNSC delegation listened to accounts about the brutality of the Myanmar army towards the Rohingyas. They told the refugees to have patience. President of UNSC Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, Haitao Wu from China, Dmitry Polyansky from Russia, and representatives from Japan, Poland, the UK, and some other countries were present at the time.

Dil Mohammad, leader of the Rohingyas in the Tambru no-man’s land said, “Around 30 members of the UNSC delegation came to visit us. They wanted to know about the violence we faced in Myanmar.” He said: “We tried to concisely tell them in detail about the barbaric incidents that happened to us.” [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LICNuVLjsV0[/embed] Another Rohingya leader Shafiul Alam said: “They were surprised to hear about the torture inflicted upon us by the Myanmar army. They told us if the incidents are completely true, then they will go back and have a discussion about how to resolve the issue quickly,” said Shafiul. The delegation team also saw pictures of barbarous torture in Rakhine State. Afterwards, the delegation went to visit Balukhali-2 Moinarghona refugee camp.Later, a press briefing was held at the Ukhiya Kutupalong D-5 block refugee camp.

The UNSC delegates said in order to ensure a safe repatriation process for the Rohingyas, they will work with Bangladesh to solve the ongoing crisis. After the press briefing, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said: “This visit of the UNSC members will play a positive role in solving the refugee crisis.” Earlier, the delegation arrived on Saturday afternoon and was received by State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and acting Foreign Secretary Rear Admiral (retd) M Khurshed Alam in Cox’s Bazar. Later, in a discussion, they exchanged opinions with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of UN agencies, Cox’s Bazar Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) Commissioner Mohammad Abul Kalam, and representatives of law enforcement agencies.
