A panel mayor was assaulted by drug addicts with hammers at Kagdi Dakkhinpara village, Friday morning.
Injured Hossain Mohammad Alamgir Mridha is the sixth ward councillor and panel mayor-2 of Shariatpur Municipality. He has been sent to Dhaka for better treatment.
Preparations to file a case are already underway by the victim’s wife Parveen Akhter.
Palong Model police station and local sources said, recently Alamgir spoke at an event against known local drug peddlers and users. There he urged both parties to refrain from drugs.
Alamgir has always been vocal against drug users and drug dealers.
On Friday, after offering Fajr Salat and having breakfast, Alamgir went to a tea stall in Kagdi Bazaar. He was attacked when having a cup of tea.
The miscreants, Shahjalal Bepari, drug peddler and son of Ramizuddin Bepari, Jalal Madbor, son of Harun Madbor, and Saddam son of Jalil Sheikh, among others of the same village, attacked Alamgir.
Alamgir immediately fell to the ground unconscious while he was indiscriminately beaten on the head and neck with hammers.
He was rescued by local people and taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. As his wounds were critical, he was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
A few months ago, an imam of a mosque was also severely beaten for speaking out against drugs.
It was easy for the miscreants to attack Alamgir, as no one was punished or convicted the last time there was such an attack.
Shariatpur Municipality Mayor, Md Rafiqul Islam Kotwal, has strongly criticized the attackers and demanded proper justice for the life threatening attack on Alamgir.
