Twenty people are suffering from eye infection, which could lead to blindness, after having eye operations at IMPACT Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre in Chuadanga.
According to sources from the health centre, 24 men and women had operations at the facility on March 5. The patients were released a day after the operations.
Of the 24, 20 patients complained of severe pain in their eyes. Initial diagnosis revealed that all of them were suffering from eye infection.
Health centre authorities sent the patients to Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital and Vision Eye Hospital, and covered the cost of the treatment.
However, the condition of the patients did not improve.
Speaking to the correspondent, the health centre Administrative Officer Dr Shafiul Kabir Jipu said: “A total of 60 people were treated from March 4 to March 5. Among them, 20 patients suffered eye infection after they were released.
“They were later sent to Dhaka for better healthcare. IMPACT covered the costs.”
He added: “We sent samples of the medication used to icddr,b in Dhaka in order to find out the cause behind the infection. The report they sent back revealed that a gram-negative bacteria might be responsible for the infection.
“A kit named Auroblue was used for the operations, and those kits contained the gram-negative bacteria. A company called IIRF Enterprise imports this type of kits from India.”
Dr Shafiul further confirmed that the patients are still undergoing treatment.
Chuadanga Civil Surgeon Dr Khairul Alam inspected the operation theatres and wards on March 29. He also formed a three-member probe team and instructed them to submit a report on the matter by April 2.
