Tangail youth arrested for disrespecting national flag on Facebook

Police have arrested a youth from Tangail’s Mirzapur for disrespecting the national flag in a Facebook post. Mazharul Islam, a private car driver, posted a photo on the social media on Monday night showing him holding a shoe next to the national flag, enraging the locals. Awami League’s Mirzapur unit General Secretary Mir Sharif Mahmud called Mazharul’s action sedition demanded to hand him maximum penalty for his offence. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ishrat Shadmin said she had ordered police to detain the youth immediately after seeing the post. Mirzapur police station’s Officer-in-Charge AKM Mizanul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune that they arrested Mazharul from Gorai area after complaints were lodged against him for disrespecting the national flag. "He is being interrogated. We will take necessary steps against him," the OC said, adding that preparations were underway for filing a case against Mazharul.
