A 32-year-old woman named Shampa Islam has reportedly killed herself in Bogra after a fight with her husband regarding his activity on popular social networking site Facebook.
Her husband, Shahidul Islam Bappi, convener of Awami Swechchasebak League's Bogra unit, told the Dhaka Tribune that some of Shampa’s friends misinformed and misled her regarding his Facebook activities, causing her to become very suspicious.
As a result, over the last two months, Shampa would get upset whenever any female Facebook user sent him a message on the website or liked or commented on his posts, which led to frequent fights.
They had another fight around 11am on Thursday.
Bappi continued: “Her mother, Morsheda Begum, visited us the day Shampa committed suicide. She even scolded her daughter for unnecessarily making a huge issue of my Facebook use. But she did not listen to any of us.”
He claimed he took sedatives to calm his nerves and was sleeping when Shampa locked herself in another room. She did not respond when their family members pleaded her to open the door, and hanged herself.
They managed to break through the door and rushed her to Bogra Mohammad Ali Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Bappi and Shampa had been married for 17 years and had two children, a seventh-grader daughter and a son who is in kindergarten.
Responding to a query, Bogra’s Banani police station Sub-Inspector Abu Syed said: “Shampa’s mother has filed a case of unnatural death over the incident. We can say what caused her death after we get the autopsy report.”
Shampa was buried at a local graveyard on Thursday.
