Update : 28 Dec 2017, 05:55 PM
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has formed a probe body to investigate the negligence of Karnaphuli police in connection to the rape of four women in Chittagong. CMP Deputy Commissioner Harun-Ur-Rashid Hazari confirmed the matter on Thursday. He said the probe body was formed on Wednesday in compliance with a court order. The two-member probe body headed by CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner Arefin Jewel was asked to submit a report within five days.

Accused Hannan put on 3-day remand

Abdul Hannan alias Hannan, the alleged mastermind of the rape, has been placed on a three-day remand. The court of Fifth Metropolitan Magistrate Al Imran Khan passed the order when PBI produced Hannan before the court with a seven-day remand plea. CMP’s Assistant Commissioner (Prosecution) Kazi Shahabuddin Ahmed confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune. A team of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Hannan from the city’s Kotwali area on Wednesday night.

Abu Sama, one of the six arrestees in the case, in his confession statement given to the court under Section 164, described Hannan as the mastermind of the rape incident. On December 12, four robbers aged around 20-25 broke into a one-storey house in Shah Mirpur village, and raped the four women at gunpoint. The women said the criminals left the house around 3am, looting cash, jewellery and smartphones. The victims filed a case accusing four people under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Karnaphuli police station on December 17, five days after the incident. Harun-Ur-Rashid Hazari on Monday publicly admitted that there was “partial failure” on the police’s part in handling the rape case. Earlier, a Chittagong court served a show-cause notice to the officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli police station for a flawed probe and delay in filing a rape case in this connection. The show-cause notice served by the court asked to explain the delay for filing the case and discrepancy in its probe. The OC was asked to reply to the notice within five days.
