Fisherman rescues deer swept away by tide

Update : 23 Dec 2017, 10:02 PM
A fisherman has rescued a drowning spotted deer,  after the animal was washed out by tidal surge at the Meghna estuary in Daulatkhan upazila of Bhola. The deer was found struggling in the water near the riverbank at Saidpur fish wharf around noon on Saturday. Local fisherman Kamal Majhi rushed to the animals rescue, using his fishing net to pull the poor animal to shore before handing it over to police who contacted forest officials. The forest officials then released the deer in the mangrove forest on the Char Johiruddin island under Tozimuddin upazila. Daulatkhan Upazila Forest Officer Md Sohel Hossain said the animal could have ended up in the water after being washed away by the high tide. This is not the first time a spotted deer has ended up near human settlements. The mangrove forest spreading across eight islands at the Meghna estuary, including Char Kukrimukri, Dhal Char, Char Johiruddin and Bashonbhanga Char, hosts more than 100,000 spotted deer. Many of the herds travel to freshwater sources at the estuary and are regularly washed away by tidal surges.
