Update : 09 Jan 2017, 01:11 AM
Some 10 staff quarters on upazila premises are in dilapidated condition and these quarters may destroy anytime, may cause havoc if would not redevelopment immediately, alleged inhabitants. Upazila office sources said some ten staff quarters named Karnaphuli, Kopotakkho, Madhumati, Meghna, Mahananda, Teesta, Ichamati, Karatoya and Surma were built in 1985. These quarters were almost decayed as the repairing and maintenance work of the quarters were not done at all. Inhabitants of the quarters, urged authorities concerned to renovate the quarters as soon as possible. Sources said total 36 families have been living at nine two-storied quarters where no one lives in one-storied Teesta. Teesta was abandoned recently as its condition was worst. Inhabitants alleged that cracks have been developed on the roofs and walls of the buildings. Weeds also grow on roofs and cracks as these quarters are uncared for long. They alleged that several upazila officials have left quarters due to the shabby condition of the structures but some families are compelled to stay there as they cannot afford to go elsewhere. Sheuli Begum, wife of Abdul Waresh, treasury auditor of the upazila office, said: “We have been living at Madhumati quarter with our children for three years. In rainy season, water slicked from the roof. Plaster of the roof and walls had been broken.” She said: “We lived here amid great risks. These buildings would be destroyed if a major earthquake jolts the area.” When contacted, Upazila Chairman AKM Ahsanul Tyub Zakir said: “We could not repair the quarters due to lack of fund.” Mirza Shakila Dil Hasin, upazila nirbahi officer, said: “Staff quarters of the upazila have to renovate immediately. We will start the work after getting fund.”
