The second server station of Sheikh Hasina Software Technology Park in Jessore has formally started its journey, providing an important backup for data storage in the country.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the newly-built park via teleconference on December 10, opening a new horizon of potential in the Bangladesh ICT sector.
Following the inauguration, all the data of government and non-government organizations can be extracted from the new tech park if the first server station in Gazipur’s Kaliakoir faces any glitch.
“This park is Bangladesh’s second server station for data storage (and) can be used if the first one faces problems,” Survey Engineer of the project, Abdullah Al Mamun, said.
“Data can be collected from here for any purpose and at any point of time.”
Park Planning Director (Joint secretary) Jahangir Alam said he hoped the park will soon start fully-fledged operations, even though innovation and software development work has already been ongoing for some time.
“The park started off with six companies five months ago,” he said. “In the second stage, 55 companies sought permission to work in the park, but after scrutiny, we allotted space to 39 of them.”
Jahangir Alam, also a joint secretary of the government, said that the Software Technology Park has been set up in Jessore targeting the 10 districts under Khulna Division.
He said: “IT industry entrepreneurs from both home and abroad can invest here. This park will facilitate operations of software development, freelancing and outsourcing, call centres, and research and development.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had promised to build a “world-class” IT Park in Jessore while inaugurating Jessore Science and Technology University on December 27, 2010.

Following that announcement, the construction of the IT Park began in February 2013 in the Bejpara in Shankarpur area of the town, at an expenditure of Tk305 crore.
The park comprises around 232,000 square feet of space with modern facilities including a 15-storey MTB building, 12-storey three-star standard dormitory building, a state-of-the art convention centre, and underground parking.
The IT park will have a 33 KVA power sub-station, fiber optic internet line and other utility services. The fiber optic connections drawn from India will start from the park and solar panels will also be set up on the terrace of the 12-storey dormitory building for an alternative source of electricity.
As per the requirements of the Japanese entrepreneurs, the entire 11th floor of the dormitory building has been transformed into a world-class gym.
Sources said all the buildings have been built with earthquake resistant composite (steel and concrete) structure.
Roksana Yasin, a visiting college student, described the park as “a unique initiative”.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina built one of the largest IT parks in the country here. It will help inspire educated youths,” she said.
Another visitor named Azgar Ali said: “This park will not only play a role in the economy of the country but also act as an recreation spot for people living in and around Jessore.”
