A woman has been beaten to death allegedly by her husband and in-laws for dowry in Tala upazila, Satkhira.
Family members of Lakshmi Rani Das, 25, were told by her husband Bipul Chandra Das on Wednesday that she had committed suicide, said her grandfather Gour Chand Das.
When Gour went to the couple's house at Terchhi village in the upazila around 12 at night, he found his granddaughter's lifeless body lying on the floor of the veranda, in a pool of blood.
Lakshmi's body was battered and covered in bruises, Gour told the Dhaka Tribune.
He further alleged that Lakshmi's husband and in-laws frequently beat her demanding dowry.
Locals said Bipul and his family had gone into hiding since Lakshmi's death.
After receiving information, Tala police recovered the body and sent to the local morgue for an autopsy.
Tala police station second officer, Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam, primary investigation indicated that the deceased had been violently tortured which caused her death.
A case has been filed in this connection, he added.
