Indefinite transport strike begins in Chittagong

Update : 03 Dec 2017, 06:05 PM
A Chittagong-based transport owners' association has launched an indefinite strike in the port city on Sunday to press home their 11-point demand. Public transports, including bus, minibus and human haulier, stayed off the road since the morning in response to the strike imposed by the Chittagong Mahanagar Gonoparibahan Malik Sangram Parishad (Chittagong Metropolitan Public Transport Owners' Association). Belayet Hossain, convener of the platform, said around 1,500 vehicles would be kept off the city roads until the administration concerned met their demands. Their demands include ending harassment of transport workers by police, relaxing conditions in issuing new driving licences and taking unfit vehicles off the roads. Thousands of commuters in the city faced immense suffering on the first day of the strike. AK Azad, a trader, said the transport workers and owners were harassing people by enforcing the strike. Taking advantage of the strik, CNG-run autorickshaw drivers and rickshaw pullers were seen charging excessive fare, several commuters alleged.
