“The situation is under control. A committee headed by Moulvibazar’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Ashraful Islam has been formed to look into the clash,” district Deputy Commissioner Md Tofayel Islam told this to the Dhaka Tribune on Friday morning.
Other members of the committee are- district’s additional superintendent of police, upazila nirbahi officer and officer-in-charge of Sreemangal police station.
Besides, the Business Association and Transport Owners Association have been observing a non-stop blockade since early morning protesting the incident.
Six people suffered bullet injuries during the clash. Four of them -- traders Pabitra Pal, Sukumar Das, Iqbal Miah and driver Shah Alam-- are undergoing treatment at Sadar hospital.
Sreemangal Transport Workers Association President Moyna Miah alleged that BGB members locked into an altercation with a microbus driver over an issue of overtaking earlier in the afternoon.
“More than 100 BGB personnel from the sector headquarters attacked all roadside business organisations with guns and sticks.”
“They indiscriminately vandalised more than 100 shops and many vehicles on Vanugach road, College road, Habiganj road, Moulvibazar road and Station road,” Moyna Miah added.
Traders Yakub Sheikh and Siddiqur Rahman alleged: “Uniformed BGB men suddenly attacked our shops and vandalised everything. Few people were injured as they fired gunshots at that time.”
However, BGB has ruled out the allegation of attacking local traders and transport workers.
Sreemangal-45 BGB Commanding Officer Major Mahmud said: “A BGB jeep narrowly escaped a head-on collision with a rashly driven local microbus on Thursday afternoon.”
“Later BGB men asked the microbus driver to show his licence. The driver could show no licence; rather he locked into an altercation. Later the driver along with some other transport workers obstructed the BGB jeep in front of Panshi Restaurant.”
The BGB official added: “The transport workers beat up BGB men mercilessly there. On information, other BGB members rushed to the spot and rescued the injured BGB men.”
The transport workers attacked and vandalised the shops and UNO-police’s vehicles at that time and set fire to tyres on road, alleged Major Mahmud.
But he denied commenting on the allegation that BGB men attacked locals and vandalised shops and vehicles. “We will brief media later,” he added further.
“Additional law enforcers have been deployed in upazila town to avert any untoward situation,” said Moulvibazar Additional ASP Mohammad Anwarul Haque.
