Rangpur attack: Court rejects Tito's bail plea

Update : 26 Nov 2017, 05:29 PM
A Rangpur court has rejected the bail petition of Tito Chandra Roy, who was arrested on charges of posting a Facebook status defaming Prophet Muhammad, which is said to have triggered the communal attack in Rangpur’s Thakurpara village. Senior Judicial Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order on Sunday after conducting the hearing in the cyber crime case. Court Sub-Inspector (CSI) Mamun-ur-Rashid has confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

Earlier on the day, Tito Roy was brought to court premises from Rangpur Central Jail under heavy security. Tito, represented by advocate Naresh Chandra Roy, appeared before the court around 1pm. During the hearing, the defence lawyer said Tito did not post the controversial status on Facebook, and the account used to make defamatory post was named “Md Tito.”

Based on these arguments, the lawyer petitioned the court for granting bail to Tito. However, CSI Mamun argued that if the suspect is granted bail, the investigation of this cyber crime case could be disrupted. After hearing the arguments, the court rejected Tito’s bail plea and set December 10 for the next hearing of the case. More than 30 homes belonging to Hindu families in Thakurpara Village were ransacked and looted before being set on fire by a mob over the rumoured Facebook post on November 10. A man was killed in police firing when the law enforcers intervened.
