Update : 25 Sep 2017, 09:18 PM
Chittagong is blessed with a number of potential tourist destinations but it needs proper planning to attract scores of tourists from home and abroad every year. President of Bangladesh International Hotel Association (BIHA) HM Hakim Ali made the remark on Monday in a press conference at Hotel Agrabad in the port city ahead of World Tourism Day. This time World Tourism Day is going to be observed on September 27 with the theme “Sustainable Tourism - A Tool for Development.” The BIHA president said: “Chittagong, abundant in scenic natural beauty, including the sea, hills, mangrove forest, waterfalls and lakes, is an attractive destination for tourists.” “These tourist spots in Chittagong will become gold mines if we can utilise them properly,” added Hakim, who also serves as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Hotel Agrabad. “The present government has decided to underscore tourism and a substantial allocation has been disbursed for the development of this sector. The government has announced 2017 as the tourism year and allocated Tk100cr to attract tourists across the globe,” he further said, adding that the tourism sector could play a vital role in promoting brotherhood among people in this strife-torn world. As in previous years, Hotel Agrabad has chalked out an elaborate programme to observe World Tourism Day. Events will include a colourful procession, drawing competition for children, and a festival of Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan food. “We have undertaken the programmes to popularise the tourist spots of Chittagong among the public,” said Hakim.
