The movement of unauthorised three-wheelers, including Nasiman, Kariman and Bhotbhot, on highways in Bogra has increased significantly due to lack of proper monitoring.
Vehicle owners, drivers and workers urged authorities concerned to be strict over plying of illegal vehicles. They also blamed three-wheelers for most accidents on highways.
Earlier, the government imposed a ban on the movement of three-wheelers on highways across the country on August 1, aimed at reducing accident on roads and highways.
In Bogra, district administration, police and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) along with transport workers’ leaders in a meeting had taken a decision to imply the ban on roads and highways. But their efforts to impose the ban went in vain, as ruling party leaders and activists of the district protested the decision.
Later, three-wheelers’ drivers and workers staged demonstration protesting the ban.
In the wake of protest, the BRTA was compelled to stop mobile courts in the district.
As authorities stopped their vigilance against three-wheelers, drivers and workers of three-wheelers again started their journey on the highways.
Wishing anonymity, a leader of Bogra district auto-tempo, auto-rickshaw and CNG Owners Coordination Committee told the Dhaka Tribune that some 15,000 three-wheeler were plying the roads and highways and 30,000 people depended on the income of three-wheelers.
During his visit in several areas in the district this correspondent found that three-wheelers are plying the roads under the nose of local administration.
Morshedul Islam, a truck driver, alleged that due to plying of three-wheeler, they have to be more conscious.
Citing Morshedul, Mokhlesur Rahman, supervisor of a Dhaka-bound bus said: “Three-wheeler are causing serious accidents on the roads.”
He urged authorities to take stern measures to stop these vehicles plying.
Assistant Director of BTRA Kazi Md Mursalin said: “Due to lack of manpower, we could not conduct mobile court regularly.
