The deceased was identified as Abu Hanif, 35, ringleader of a robbers' gang.
Officer-in-Charge of Dhamrai police station Dipak Kumar Saha told the Dhaka Tribune that when a group was taking preparation for committing robbery, a team of police conducted the drive at the village early in the morning.
But sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire at them prompting a retaliation that triggered a gunfight that left Hanif bullet injured.
He was taken to Dhamrai Upzila Health Complex where on duty doctor declared him dead.
The OC said he was accused in 14 cases with different police stations, including Savar, Dhamrai, Ashulia, Keraniganj and Kamrangichar.
The body was sent to Savar Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
