A group of men entered the PowerPac Mutiara Jamalpur Power Plant Ltd and looted equipment worth over Tk1 crore on Wednesday night.
They first took the 22 guards and workers inside the plant hostage, tied them with ropes, and then carried out the robbery, plant officials said.
They said the 100MW power plant of Shikdar Group has been out of production for over two years.
Power plant manager Mohammad Alamgir Hossain said the incident occurred at around 7:30pm on Wednesday.
He said that a group of 4 to 5 men entered the plant at first. They approached the security personnel and were looking for an electrician. The security personnel did not recognize the electrician and were looking for the name in the register book.
At that time, the group held the security personnel hostage and entered the main premises. Later, they tied up all 22 staff members and continued their robbery throughout the night. They stole the computers, cameras and hard drives from the office building as well.
The official, however, could not give the exact number of robbers involved in the act. A case in this regard will be filed with Jamalpur Sadar Police Station, he added.
Sohrab Hossain, additional superintendent of police of Jamalpur range, said law enforcers have visited the plant already and legal action will be taken once a case is filed.
