Monirul Islam, chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, believes that fines, prison sentences and death penalty are not enough to curb militancy since it is yielded in one’s mind.
“We need to target the psyche [of the militants] and the youth can play an important role in that regard,” he said on Friday, while addressing a workshop at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka.
The CTTC chief, known for spearheading police’s counterterrorism drives, also said that how terrorism and extremism were not only for the law enforcement agencies to fight but that of all citizens.
“Families, educational institutions, civil society, cultural personalities, and Islamic clerics are responsible for clarifying and providing the correct explanations. Only then can we instil a culture of harmony, tolerance in future generations,” he said.
Addressing the event, freedom fighter and Dorshok Srota Pathak Foundation President Ziaul Hasan said: “During the Liberation War, the youth dreamt of an independent country which is why we achieved independence. But we are not done.
“The youth of today need to fight against drugs, rape, crimes and communalism.”
