HC asks Morshed Khan family to surrender

Update : 09 Nov 2016, 06:42 PM
The High Court Wednesday ordered BNP Vice Chairperson and former foreign minister M Morshed Khan, his wife Nasreen Khan, son Faisal Morshed Khan to surrender before a lower court within six weeks in a money laundering case. A High Court bench of Justices M Enayetur Rahim and Amir Hossain also asked for a fresh probe into the case and ordered to freeze their bank accounts in Hong Kong till March 31, 2016. The bench asked the trial court to consider granting bails to them after surrender. The HC also disposed of the rule it issued on June 5. In the rule, the court asked why the final report, which recommended their acquittal in a money laundering case, should not be rejected and why a fresh investigation would not be ordered into the case. The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed an application with the HC against a lower court’s admission of the final report prepared by its investigators, which moved the court to issue the order and rule. ACC filed a case against the trio under the Money Laundering Control Act and filed final report in July 2015, saying no money laundering was involved. The trial court exempted them from charges on April 15 this year. The Hong Kong police had sealed the Standard Charter Bank accounts in 2008 on money laundering charges and informed Bangladesh that they would allow reopening of the accounts in the absence of any further steps by the Bangladesh authorities.
