Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha is going to take necessary steps for the appointment of some new judges to the Appellate and High Court divisions of the Supreme Court for quick disposal of the pending cases.
President Abdul Hamid will appoint the judges taking advice from the prime minister after getting proposal from the chief justice in this regard.
Law Minister Anisul Huq informed it to the newsmen after making a courtesy visit with SK Sinha in the latter’s SC office in the afternoon.
Anisul continued that there was discussion on different issues particularly the judiciary as well as the ways and means to lessen the backlog of pending cases across the country.
All necessary steps would be taken for quick and fare disposals of the cases, Anisul went on.
Three posts in the Appellate Division have remained while the number of High Court judges has stood at 87 from the highest number of 100 after the retirement or promotion of some judges.
The law minister also said a draft law regarding removing the apex court judge would be sent to the SC for scrutinising.
Later with its opinions, the draft would be finalised and then a bill will be placed before the parliament for passing, he added.
Lawmakers on September 17 last year brought the 16th constitutional amendment bill, empowering the parliament to impeach SC judges on the grounds of misbehaviour and inefficiency.
