The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has declared the appeal proceedings of war crime convict Abdul Alim as defunct.
The five-member Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain on Tuesday passed the order in response to a plea filed by the counsel of Abdul Alim.
In its order, the SC said the proceedings of the appeal petition has “abated,” as Abdul Alim has died. Any petition shall abate on the death of a petitioner.
Earlier on October 9, the International Crimes Tribunal 2 awarded the former BNP minister of Gen Ziaur Rahman cabinet the punishment for committing crimes against humanity in Joypurhat during the 1971 Liberation War.
On November 7, Abdul Alim lodged an appeal with the Appellate Division questioning the tribunal verdict that had sentenced him to jail until death.
Alim sought acquittal from the war crimes charges.
On August 30, the former BNP minister died at the Intensive Care Unit of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
