Two women gave confessional statements in a case filed with the capital’s Shahbagh police station in connection with the stealing of a baby boy from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital earlier this month.
The two accused are Rasheda Khanom alias Parvin, 48, and Belly Akter alias Rahima, 45.
On August 29, a Dhaka court placed the duo on three days’ remand in the case after they had been arrested by RAB in Gazipur’s Board Bazar area with the stole baby.
Yesterday, Sub-Inspector Ferdous Alam, also investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court after the remand was over and filed a petition before the court to record their confessional statements.
Following the pleas, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Masud Sheikh recorded Parvin’s statement and Metropolitan Gagistrate Sabrina Ali recorded Rahima’s. The respective judges then sent the women to jail.
On August 28, a team of Rapid Action Battalion rescued the stolen baby from and detained the two women.
After rescuing the baby, RAB at a briefing said Parvin was a professional midwife. She came to the DMCH on August 21 to visit one of her relatives. The same day Runa gave birth to the twins.
Parvin managed to get acquainted with Runa and took one of her babies into her lap. At on stage, she took the baby away from the gynecology ward and fled the hospital.
Acting on secret information, RAB members conducted a raid at Parvin’s residence at Borad Bazar around 3am and arrested her, RAB said.
Later, on the basis of information given by Parvin, RAB raided Rahima’s house and found the baby there.
