The court framed the charges under section 396 of the Penal Code since the murder was committed during a robbery.

The six accused are driver Humayun Kabir, Habib Hawlader, Sobuj Khan, Belal Hossain, Raju Munshi and Md Rasel.

Of them, Md Rasel has been absconding since filing of the case while Sobuj was released on bail from the High Court. Four of the accused made confessional statements and admitted to committing the murder.

During yesterday’s hearing, prosecution read out the charges and asked the accused whether they were guilty or not. The six claimed themselves innocent.

Sub-Inspector Md Ashiq Iqbal of RAB 3 submitted the charge sheet in March with the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.

According to the case, prominent photojournalist Aftab Ahmed, who had been honoured with the “Ekushey Padak” in 2006, was killed at his Wapda Road residence in the capital’s Rampura on December 25 last year.

The body of the 80-year-old journalist was recovered from his house in the morning with his hands and legs tied with ropes.

His brother-in-law Monowar Ahamed Sagor filed the murder case with Rampura police station accusing unnamed persons.
