The war crimes tribunal yesterday deferred recording of testimonies in the trial against Maulana Abdus Subhan, the incumbent nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, as the prosecution pleaded for more time.
The prosecution said they could not place their 21st witness as he had been sick. After hearing the plea, the International Crimes Tribunal fixed July 16 for placing the witness. According to the tribunal sources, this could be the last prosecution witness, the investigation officer, in the case.
Meanwhile, the defence of another accused ATM Azharul Islam, the assistant secretary general of Jamaat, placed a petition seeking two weeks’ time to start placing their witnesses in the case.
Yesterday was fixed for submitting four names of their witness and their deposition is supposed to begin on Sunday. Prosecutor Tapos K Baul confirmed that the petition had been placed and said that a hearing on the petition might be held on Sunday.
A total of 19 prosecution witnesses testified at the Tribunal 2 against Azhar, a Rangpur al-Badr commander during the 1971 Liberation War, who is facing six charges of crimes against humanity.
