SC scraps acquittal of Mir Nasir, son

Update : 03 Jul 2014, 10:33 PM

The Supreme Court has annulled the High Court judgement that acquitted former BNP state minister Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin and his son Mir Helal Uddin in a graft case.

In 2007, a lower court handed down 13 years and three years’ jail for Nasir and Helal respectively, in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of illegally accumulating wealth worth around Tk28 crore.

However, in 2011, an HC bench, led by Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain, acquitted the duo.

Mir Nasir told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday: “A five-member top court bench headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain said the HC verdicts was scrapped because it was incorrect. Then, the Appellate Division sent the matter to the High Court bench led by Justice Nizamul Huq for further hearing.”

The BNP leader claimed that ruling Awami league leaders Mohammad Nasim and AHM Mostofa Kamal had been acquitted by the High Court despite being convicted during the army-backed caretaker regime.

The “obedient” ACC did not appeal against the HC verdicts.

He said they would seek review of the apex court decision.

Mir Nasir also said as the Appellate Division had not cancelled their bail, they would remain free.
