Update : 03 Jul 2014, 09:14 PM

A Dhaka court yesterday deferred the depositions recording in the Jahangirnagar University student Zubair murder case as none of the witnesses was present before it.

Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 deferred the trial proceedings following a time petition filed by the tribunal’s public prosecutor SM Rafiquel Islam.

After granting the petition, the court set July 9 for the next date of hearing. Till now, 25 out of 37 prosecution witnesses gave depositions in this case.

Zubair Ahmed, 23, an undergraduate of English department, died in a city hospital on January 9, 2012, hours after he was abducted and tortured on the campus by his political opponents. The university authorities filed the murder case with Ashulia police station.

Sub-Inspector Mir Shahin Shah Parvez of Ashulia police station, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet on April 8, 2012.

On September 8 last year, the court indicted 13 JU students, also Bangladesh Chhatra League JU unit activists, for the killing which sparked massive protests in the campus for punishment of the killers that led to the resignation of JU Vice Chancellor Shariff Enamul Kabir.

Seven of the accused were expelled from the campus for life while the rest six for two years after a probe body of the university found their involvement in the murder.
