Youth fell prey to wrong treatment

Update : 26 Jun 2014, 06:44 PM

A youth became victim of wrong treatment at a so-called clinic and diagnostic centre in Gazipur which has left his family in shatters.

Although the clinic and diagnostic centre located at Maona intersection was sealed off by a mobile court on Wednesday night following a complaint that the youth had to suffer a lot because of “wrong treatment”, he did not get back his organs which doctors cut during a surgery.

Sources said Zaman Mia, a resident of Pelaid village of Gazipur, had been admitted to the Shapla Medical and Diagnostic Centre after feeling stomach ache on June 17.

After admission, physicians of the clinic told relatives of Zaman that he had been suffering from appendix pain and he needed a surgery.

Doctors and nurses of that clinic also conducted a surgery and they took more than three hours to conduct the surgery. After the surgery, the condition of Zaman started deteriorating.

On May 18, his family members took him to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the on duty doctors informed Zaman's family that he had become victim of wrong treatment as he had not been suffering from appendix pain.

Zaman also faced a surgery at the MMCH where he had to stay for 16 days for treatment. He is now in stable condition.

Habibur Rahman, father of Zaman, filed a case with the Sripur Model police station on June 17 accusing Doctor Mofizur Rahman and Director of the clinic Rafiqul Islam.

Upon filing of the case, a probe committee led by Dr Kamruzzaman Sumon, medical officer of civil surgeon office, was formed on June 18. The probe committee submitted its report on Wednesday.

After getting the report, a mobile court led by Sripur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Sadekur Rahman rushed to the clinic and sealed it off.

Denying wrong treatment, Dr Mofizur Rahman Fahim told the Dhaka Tribune that he requested relatives of the patients to do an x-ray test, but they did not comply with it.

“During surgery, we noticed that the patient was not suffering from appendix pain and we immediately referred him to the MMCH.”

Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Nurul Islam said they had sent the probe report to Directorate General of Health Services requesting to cancel the licence of the clinic.

Habibur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that he had to spent Tk2 lakh for his son’s treatment. He demanded compensation from the clinic.
