The traffic department of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has removed the retractable spikes set up on Hare Road on experimental basis.
The officials removed the metal machine Tuesday night after it was set up just two weeks ago on May 23. The installation of metal spikes aimed to act on vehicles coming from the wrong direction.
The traffic department has set up a police box there now.
According to police and eyewitness, the metal spikes were laid to puncture the tyres of vehicles coming from the wrong sides, but the system worked in the opposite way, puncturing tyres of those motor cars coming from right direction. Also, the machine failed to withstand the heavy pressure of vehicles and broke its teeth. The Traffic Department appeared to be undone and removed the retractable spikes.
The DMP media and publication wing said the steel of the machine set up on Hare Road was very light, adding that the engineering department was working on reinstalling the device by improving the sustainability of the steel spikes.
When asked, Khan Mohammad Rezwan, deputy commissioner of traffic (South) of the DMP, told the Dhaka Tribune that the machine had been removed, as it was faulty. The new device would be set up shortly after being improved, he said.
About setting up the police box, he said police would remain on duty to stop vehicles coming from the wrong direction and the box would protect the duty officials from rain and heat.
