HC issues contempt rules against DCCS, BTCL officials

Update : 06 May 2014, 08:01 PM

The High Court yesterday issued contempt rules against high officials of the Dhaka South City Corporation and the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd for allegedly flouting its previous orders.

The bench of Justice Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Ashraful Kamal passed the orders in the two separate cases.

The HC asked the city corporation’s administrator, chief executive officer and secretary to explain within two weeks why they should not be punished for contempt of court for disobeying a directive to regularise the jobs of 88 staff members in its revenue sector.

The court also sought explanations from three BTCL officials as to why they ignored an order to not cut off the phone lines of Jamir Telecom, whose managing director is Noufel Jamir, a son of former speaker and BNP leader Jamir Uddin Sircar.

The state-owned telephone company’s managing director Mahfuj Uddin Ahmad, general manager AA Mohammad Moasir and director (overseas) Ziadul Anam were given one week to respond to the court.

In a petition earlier, Noufel claimed that the BTCL cut his company’s link on March 20, despite a 2012 HC ruling directing BTCL to refrain from cutting the link until the disposal of a compensation matter. The petitioner mentioned that the compensation issue was pending in an arbitration tribunal, comprising of three former chief justices.

Meanwhile, another High Court bench on Monday summoned the officer in charge of Ullapara police station in Sirajganj, as well as the investigating officer concerned, over the incident of removing the kidneys of a child that led to his death.

Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo ordered the two police officers to appear before the court on May 18 with an updated report on the murder case.
